TJFC Grading for U12s and 13s

The Grading process to select teams for the Under 12s and Under 13s Mixed competitions is expected to be finalised this week.

This is done through a combination of assessing skills and observing players in a game situation.

Thirroul JFC is still seeking more players for our Under 12s teams. Any late registrations will be assessed and placed in the appropriate team. Any player turning 12 this year who has not yet registered will be expected to play Under 12s.

Registration to play for Thirroul JFC in the 2022 season will be open from Wednesday, 5 January.

Parents, guardians and carers can claim the NSW Government’s Active Kids Voucher in advance by visiting the Services NSW website.

Thirroul JFC has maintained 2022 registration costs for all Junior players at the same $200 fee as last season.

A $40 Sibling Discount is available when registering three or more players from the same family. Parents must link their children when registering to receive the Sibling Discount.

For senior Thunder, Thunderbirds and GPR players, registration this year will be $210.

Registration for the 2022 season will open in early January and there will be Junior Registration Sessions at Club Thirroul on Saturday, 6 February (9am to 12pm) and Tuesday 8 February (6pm to 8pm).

The first point of business for the 2022 TJF committee was to set the cost if registration fees for next season.

The committee decided that there should be no increase to the cost of registration for junior and senior players in 2022, with the club to absorb an increase in the insurance component of playing fees.

Summer 7s COVID update

Most people would now be aware of the positive COVID-19 cases in our community and also that there are many close contacts who are currently having to isolate.

Thirroul JFC realise that this will affect some of the players in the Junior Summer 7s competition, so with this in mind the club has made a decision to delay the start of the Junior competition from until Monday 15th November.

Please stay safe and well and we look forward to seeing you out on the pitch soon.

At this stage, the Senior Summer 7s will commence as scheduled next Wednesday, 10th November.

If there are any further changes, Thirroul JFC will contact the team managers and post updates on the club’s website and social media accounts.

Thunderbirds kick around and 2022 expressions of interest

All 2021 Thunderbirds and any players interested in playing for the club’s open age women’s or Youth League teams in 2022 are invited to a kick around at Gibson Park on Tuesday, 16th November.

The session will start at 6.30pm and is open to players of all levels turning 16 years of age or older in 2022. New players are welcome.

Thirroul JFC is the biggest sporting club in Wollongong’s north and regularly fields Division 1, 2, 3 or Women’s Youth League teams.

The club will consider entering a Thunderbirds O30s team next season if there is enough interest.

With a strong junior base at Thirroul JFC, the Thunderbirds have been on the rise in recent seasons and aim to continue building in 2022.

Players attending the kick around will need to comply with COVID-19 regulations, including being fully vaccinated and using a QR code to sign in.

Please be advised that the kick around scheduled for Tuesday, 9th November has been cancelled due to a variety of reasons.

Summer 7s announcement

Thirroul JFC is pleased to announce the club’s intention to run a six-week SUMMER 7s competition commencing on Monday, 8 November for Juniors and Wednesday, 10 November for Seniors.

This is subject to approval by FNSW and FSC approval, and will be conducted in accordance with the NSW Government’s Public Health Orders.

All participants and anyone attending Gibson Park for Senior Summer 7s MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED and sign in using the QR code supplied.

To comply with social distancing requirements the number of teams will be limited and the number of fields used will also be limited.  Matches that cannot be played due to weather conditions or for any other reason may not be replayed.

TEAM ONLY registrations will be accepted; there will be NO INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATIONS.

All players 16 years and older MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF FULL VACCINATION before registration is accepted.

All persons over the age of 16 attending matches as spectators MUST be fully vaccinated and provide proof when requested. The club recommends that anyone 12 years old older attending Gibson Park in any capacity SHOULD be fully vaccinated.

All players and spectators must follow all Government Health Directives and any other requirements set out by FNSW, FSC or Thirroul Junior Football Club. These include but are not limited to:

• Covid Safe Check-In when arriving at the ground.

• Arriving no earlier than 15 minutes before the scheduled start of a match.

• Leaving the ground as soon as practical after matches finish.

• Players can only play one match. No doubling up or filling in for other teams.

• Social distancing to be observed at all times while at the ground.

• No borrowing of bibs.

The club may at its discretion cancel the competitions should conditions arise that make it unsafe to continue. Conditions may include but are not limited to: 

• Re-imposition of outdoor activity restrictions by the NSW Government

• Actual or suspected transmission of the COVID-19 at the ground.

• Actual or suspected provision of inaccurate vaccination documentation.

• Failure or refusal to provide vaccination evidence when requested.

• Failure to follow any of the requirements for attending or participating in Summer 7s matches, such as:

  • Failing to check-in on arrival at the ground.

  •  Failure or refusal to provide vaccination evidence when requested.

  • Any form of anti-social behaviour while at the ground, including not maintaining social distancing or leaving the ground as soon as practical after matches.

As the Summer 7s will be a shortened competition, there will be:

• A reduced registration fee of $80 for Seniors and $60 for Juniors, which covers insurance, referee payments, ground hire, lights and other costs.

• No finals series

First preference will be given to Thirroul JFC registered players and teams who have supported the Thirroul JFC Summer 7s competition on an ongoing basis.

Once your team has been confirmed by Thirroul JFC, all players will need to register and pay to secure your spot in the draw.

After 37 years of hard work, dedication and service to the world game, well respected and admired Football volunteer Debbie Crawford has decided to call it a day with her beloved Thirroul Junior Soccer Club.

To achieve over 37 years of volunteer work in our sport is an amazing achievement in itself and one the 69-year-old was honoured in doing as a Canteen Coordinator and Registrar and it was all thanks to her sons who fell in love with the game that brought Crawford to her second home, namely Thomas Gibson Park.

“When my eldest son turned 7, we decided to sign him up to the Thirroul Junior Soccer Club and I was working full-time but always believed that if you have kids and enter them into sport, you need to contribute to that sport in some way,” Crawford stated to Football NSW.

“I volunteered in the canteen and ended up running it every Saturday and Sunday mornings since then for the past 37 years along with being registrar also.”

Volunteers are known as the heartbeat of any football club and Crawford exemplified that plus an array of other qualities that saw her contribute weekly as the star attraction of Thirroul Junior Soccer Club stated the many positives she experienced whilst doing her duties.

“There are so many positives I can tell you about being a volunteer and what it did for me.

“Lifelong friendships that will be with me forever is certainly a major one. I’ve seen a lot of different people on our committee and in turn made more friends from that.

“We hosted trivia nights, balls, social evenings, special events, fundraisers to deck out the new canteen (many years ago), the list goes on.

“I’ve so enjoyed meeting the new parents to the club each year with their 4–5-year-old kids. They just want answers and that is what has kept me going, the smiles on the little ones faces when they hold a ball and get their special uniform is quite simply priceless.

“Most parents are so appreciative, and I love helping them find a friend for their team and keeping the older children enjoy this great game.

“I spent many many hours at the start of the season ensuring our MiniRoos got at least one of their nominated friends in their team.  Generally, they get more than one friend, but it is such a juggling game when new kids sign up and want to play with that same friend.  I think I can count on one hand the only times we haven’t been able to achieve a happy team.”

There were of course a number of key achievements and moments Crawford endured throughout her time with the Football South Coast club that will live long in her memory now that she’s bided farewell the sport as a volunteer.

“I’m quite honoured to be a life member and have been one for a very long time at the club.

“I achieved setting up and installing the fixtures in our new canteen about 20 years ago and it is still the same fixtures today.

“I have been awarded several awards at our own club over the years such as the ‘Junior Club Person of the Year’ and I did receive a Football South Coast ‘Volunteer Award’ at a local function in 2016 which was presented to me by FSC Life Member David Swan. I was so blown away with the club nominating me for this award.

“The biggest achievement for me has been every year as registrar, setting up the system, ensuring payments are done, photos are correct, everything is submitted on time and in a smooth fashion and then the kids being told their teams and then finally hitting the field.  Yes, it is hours and hours of work, but I enjoy doing all this at home and I would do it again in a heartbeat.  I ran the canteen for roughly 9-10 years and the remainder of my 37 years in the club has been as registrar.”

With the game crying out for more volunteers, Crawford was hopeful that more parents would show interest especially after two interrupted Covid seasons with 2022 tipped to see many more participants return the beautiful game.

“It’s no secret that attracting new volunteers to the game has been a problem across the state. It’s been a real problem even at our club, we struggle with the younger generation putting up their hand hence our committee is generally people who have had more than 20 years’ experience at the club.

“Generally, we get volunteer coach/managers as we advise them if they don’t find a volunteer, the team cannot run.

“I wish I had a magic wand to answer this question, but I don’t.  We as a committee just continue to ask parents to help so hopefully we will see more join in 2022.”

It certainly will be a different year when grassroots football returns in 2022 for Crawford who hinted that the free time she will finally inherit will be spent still watching the game but spending quality time with her family and friends.

“Now I will be spending more time on the weekend watching my granddaughters play football.

“They joined Fernhill for the first time in U6 and U8s but with my commitment on Saturdays, I only got to see a few of their games.

“I will also spend some more quality time with my partner and maybe some extra holidays in Australia only until things settle down.

“My eldest grandson loves basketball so maybe I will get to watch him play as well and the other grandkids are also keen on football and dance.  I am sure they will fill my weekends.”

Congrats on a wonderful innings Debbie, the game owes a lot to you, we cannot thank you enough for what you have done servicing the game and your beloved club Thirroul Junior Soccer Club.

Heal Country! Thirroul JFC acknowledges 2021 NAIDOC Week

Thirroul JFC acknowledges NAIDOC Week, which is being celebrated across Australia in recognition of the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the oldest continuing culture on the planet.

NAIDOC Week is celebrated not only by our First Nations People, but by Australians from all walks of life.

Last year our Thunderbirds teams took part in NAIDOC celebrations and played in specially designed Indigenous shirts, which they hope to do again when the competition resumes.

The theme of NAIDOC 2021 is HEAL COUNTRY! 

Heal Country, heal our nation.

It sustains our lives in every aspect - spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally.

It is more than a place.

When we talk about Country it is spoken of like a person.

Stay at home training guide

Football activities have been suspended until at least Friday, 9 July BUT that doesn’t mean players can’t maintain their competitive edge.

During the lockdown, it is important to remain healthy, active and engaged.

COVID update: All FSC competitions suspended

As per the announcement from the NSW Government from 6pm Saturday, 26 June, the Wollongong LGA will be required to lockdown until 11.59pm, 9 July.

Therefore, FSC will be invoking a full suspension of all matches from 6pm, Saturday 26 June 2021 until 11.59pm Friday, 9 July.

Effective immediately, all games, training and other football activities must cease;

• All competitions and leagues will be suspended until 11.59pm on Friday, 9 July 2021;

• Any football activity which takes place during this period is not sanctioned by Football NSW and, therefore, the Personal Accident insurance cover that is provided as part of a player’s registration may not apply.

TJFC welcomes Thirroul Dental Care as new sponsor

Thirroul JFC is delighted to welcome Thirroul Dental Care as a new sponsor of the club and supporter of our Thunderbirds womens teams.

Thirroul Dental Care has been servicing the local community since 2003 and those who have visited the principal dentist, Dr. Barry Joukhador, would be aware of his passion for sport.

Barry contacted Thirroul JFC wanting to support the club and we thank him and Thirroul Dental Care for their generous approach.

The Thirroul Dental Care name and logo appears on the shirts presented to players in our four Thunderbirds women’s teams for training and warm-up sessions before matches.

Thunderbirds support headspace Wollongong

Thirroul Thunderbirds are supporting headspace Wollongong in Sunday's FSC Women's Charity Round and the club is collecting donations on their behalf.

Donations for any amount from $5 can be made by visiting the TJFC Shop or clicking on this link.

Representatives of headspace Wollongong will be at Gibson Park on Sunday for the Thunderbirds Division 1, 2 and 3 matches to raise awareness and funds for mental health services for 12-25 year olds.

More than 75 per cent of mental health issues develop before a person turns 25.

headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds. headspace can help young people with mental health, physical health (including sexual health) alcohol and other drug services, and work and study support.

Over the years FSC has partnered with a number of organisations to raise awareness and funds to support the work of many great causes.

This year FSC, through the Women’s Competition, will support headspace as part of its Charity Round on Sunday 16 May.

Participating clubs will support headspace through their collections, events and raffles.  Representatives from headspace will also be in attendance at Thomas Gibson Park, Thirroul from midday to 2pm this Sunday.

headspace Wollongong participates in projects for young women in partnership with multiple organisations who work in the youth and health sector including Kiama Youth Services, Port Kembla Youth Project, Careways and MCCI. These programs for young women focus on wellbeing, self-care and healthy relationships and the Charity Round will assist these initiatives.

TJFC welcome Murphy's Coffee Co. as new sponsor

Thirroul JFC is pleased to welcome Murphy’s Coffee Co. as the sponsor of the TJFC Skills Development Program for junior players.

Murphy’s Coffee Co. proprietor Andrew Murphy has been a supporter of Thirroul JFC for a number of years and his mobile coffee van is regularly at Gibson Park on Saturday and Sunday mornings for junior matches.

Murphy’s Coffee Co. vans are available to bring the caffeine convenience to your events and private functions, as well as offering drive through services. A Murphy’s Coffee Co. van can be found most mornings at Latini’s Discount Tyres and Mechanical Repairs, opposite Bulli Public School.

Thirroul JFC is delighted that Andrew will continue to provide excellent coffee - as well as tea, and other goodies - from the black Murphy’s Coffee Company van parked near the club house at Gibson Park this season.

Andrew has also extended his association with the club in 2021 by sponsoring the TJFC Skills Development Program, run by John Cropper, TJFC Mentor: Coaching and Development.

The TJFC Skills Development Program is aimed at improving the skills of junior players registered to play for the club this season.

Sessions for Under 9s-to-U13s age groups are on Mondays and there is a Girls Only session each Wednesday.

The Murphy’s Coffee Company logo appears on the back of the training shirts worn by the players in the TJFC Skills Development Program.

Sponsorship helps the club to cover costs such as playing shirts, balls, training equipment, ground hire, lighting and other items, such as the new portable goal posts on wheels now used for both grounds.

TJFC U12s Cono Cup Gallery

Thirroul JFC’s U12As and U12Bs teams took part in the Cono Cup on Saturday, 27 March.

For many of the players it was their first time playing on a full size pitch.

The U12As qualified for the semi-finals, while the U12Bs were in a tough pool with South Coast United, Shellharbour and Balgownie, who won the tournament with a 4-1 defeat of Figtree in the final.
