Thirroul junior Reagan Ogle signs with English club

Brad Walter

Thirroul junior Reagan Ogle has signed a two year professional contract with English League Two club Accrington Stanley after making his first team debut in the last home game of the season.

Reagan, who played his junior football for Thirroul JFC alongside a number of players in the Thunder's Youth Grade team, joined Accrington Stanley's youth academy on a scholarship after moving to England with his family to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time footballer.

His proud parents, Cathryn and Phil, said the contract was a reward for the hard work Reagan has put in so far.

"Phil and I are very proud," Cathryn said. "This was his dream and he has worked tremendously hard to get there.

"He is a very proud Aussie and also of his football roots being [with] Thirroul JFC. He was a junior at Thirroul for a few years before we left to live in England."

Reagan, who began playing for Thirroul JFC in 2004 as a five-year-old, detailed his journey in an in interview on the AccringtonStanley.co.uk website.

“I had a friend who came over here and I’d been to school with his daughter and he suggested I came over to see how I’d do," Reagan said.

"We didn’t really think anything would come of it but it was good to see how I compared to English kids and English football.

"When Accrington gave me the chance more or less straight away I wanted to give it a go. I thought if it didn’t work I’d go home a better player than I was. Getting a scholarship was great but once that had happened I wanted to be a pro.”

The 18-year-old fullback was offered a two year contract and will join the first team ranks at Wham Stadium after making his League Two debut as a late sub in the last home game of the season against Luton Town.

Reagan, who had a successful loan spell with non-league Ramsbottom United, also featured in Stanley's Checkatrade Trophy defeat to Wolves last November and has been on the bench for the Reds in several other matches.

He said he could see a path to the club's senior setup from being involved with the under 18’s and now aims to establish himself in the first team.

“Having been at the club for a few years as I have when you get into the youth team you think that it could happen in terms of going pro and if you have a good season or two it becomes more realistic because you’re training with the first team and you know that’s what you want to do,” he said.

“As soon as you get that feeling you want that contract and once you get it it’s a great feeling.

“In the first year of the youth team I wasn’t really thinking about a contract, more about having a good season then in the second year I started playing quite well, went out on loan and that helped and when I came back there were clubs looking at me and I felt like I had a shot.

“When you get on the first team bench for the first time it’s something else. It’s completely different.”

Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman announced the promotion of Reagan to the first squad, along with another 18-year-old Zehn Mohammed.

“We are delighted that Reagan and Zehn have signed,” Coleman said. “They have huge potential and we are looking forward to working with them.

Both players have come through the youth ranks with the club and it’s a big boost to under 18s lead coach Andy Gray.

“We’re chuffed for them,” Gray said. “This is a great opportunity for them to progress. John and Jimmy have seen them in training and watched them. It’s great that Reagan has already made his debut, it’s a pat on the back for the the academy staff and it shows there’s a progression path from the academy to the first team at Accrington Stanley.”

125th anniversary: From Rovers to Bluebells to Thunder, Thunderbirds, Thunderbolts & GPR

Brad Walter

Thirroul JFC will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the club with a Thunder-Mental Trivia Night on Saturday, May 20 at Thirroul Bowling Club.

The Thunder will fittingly play Balgownie on Saturday at Gibson Park, as Rangers were one of the clubs Thirroul FC - known as Thirroul Rovers - played in their first season after being founded at a meeting on May 21, 1895.

Other teams included Helensburgh Rovers, Corrimal and Woonona Swifts, who were founded shortly after the Thirroul club.

Gibson Park drainage: Before and after photos

Brad Walter

For those who have endured years of frustration and anxiety whenever it rained about cancelled games and training at Gibson Park these photos may seem hard to believe.

The top photo and several others were taken today, Saturday March 4, after more than 120mm of rain. The other photos are from last year, after similar heavy rain.

The difference is stunning and will be a game changer for Thirroul JFC this seasons and in the years ahead.

The ground is closed for the weekend, along with all Wollongong City Council grounds, but during the season Thirroul teams will be able to play when they previously couldn't and training wouldn't be constantly disrupted every time it rains.

We also expect the playing surface to be better for longer as it won't be effected by grass die off from flooding or teams being forced to train on degraded areas.

To help preserve the surface, teams will be discouraged from training on ground 1 as much as possible as other areas should be in good condition.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this possible by supporting the club's fundraising  through the annual Race Nights or by buying Junior Team Photos and playing senior Summer 7s on Sunday afternoons while the grounds were out of action due to the drainage works.

Thirroul JFC would particularly like to thank the Member for Keira, Ryan Park MP, for $35,000 funding from the State Government 2015 Community Building Program and Wollongong City Council for a $30,000 grant to enable the club to do both grounds.

It is estimated that the drainage improvements also cost Thirroul JFC a similar amount through the club's contribution to the costs and lost revenue from Summer 7s this year so please continue to support our fundraising events and through the sponsorship packages on the thirroulfootball.com.au website.

Finally, Thirroul JFC would like to thank Turspec for doing such a fantastic job.

Honours Even Between Thirroul and Wests

Brad Walter

Wests Illawarra and Thirroul Thunder shared the spoils in a competitive cup tie that could have gone either way at Memorial Park on Sunday.

Chris Twigg scored one in each half for Wests, while two goals either side of the half time break from Jesse Bragg and Adam Ward saw the Thunder come from behind and take the lead, if only briefly.

Chris Twigg scored one in each half for Wests, while two goals either side of the half time break from Jesse Bragg and Adam Ward saw the Thunder come from behind and take the lead, if only briefly.

The result leaves Thirroul in pole position to advance to the next stages of the Fraternity Cup, but leaves the door open for Wests if they can overcome Balgownie in the last pool fixture next Thursday.

Wests dominated the opening exchanges, forcing two early corners, but Thirroul’s organised defence packed the area and allowed no way through.

It didn’t take long for Wests to realise that their most effective weapon could be the long ball for their pacey wingers and forwards to run onto. In the 5th minute, Daniel Boyd sent a ball through to Twigg, who reached the byline before cutting it back for Jordan Hughes, who forced a good save out of Chris Wearing in the Thirroul goal.

That was just a dress rehearsal for Wests’ next move, though, and in the 8th minute, they got it just right. Again it was Boyd who launched a long ball from his own half for Twigg who out-paced his marker and fired home for the opener.

It was totally against the run of play when Thirroul equalised just before the break. But it was poor marking at the back that let the Thunder in. Nathan Mucci was allowed far too much space, giving him time to pick out Bragg in the box, and the Thirroul forward made no mistake with virtually their first chance of the game in the 33rd minute.

The second half had barely begun when the Thunder found themselves in front.

This time the Wests back line froze as they looked for an offside flag that never appeared. Bragg was provider for Thirroul’s second, his back header landing at the feet of Ward, who fired a left foot shot past a helpless Kyle Booth.

Updated: Thunder Win Grand Final

Brad Walter

Report by Daniel McGookin for Football South Coast

Thirroul Thunder have won the WGC Cranes District League Reserve Grade Grand Final, triumphing in a free-flowing and entertaining match played in perfect football conditions at WIN Stadium.

The impressive 4-2 victory over a determined Fernhill Foxes outfit has put a full stop on a season that has contained tragedy and now triumph for Thirroul.

Thirroul Thunder coach Kevin Lewis was a proud and relieved man following the the result today.

“I am very, very, very happy with the win. It has been a long tough year for the club, with 25,26 boys part of that game today,” he said.

“There has been three or four games against Fernhill through the year and they have all been tough battles so thank goodness we came out on top today.”

The grand final started perfectly for the Foxes, with Fernhill having the dream start earning a corner within the opening seconds of the fixture.

The corner drifted to an isolated Mitchell Woods at the back of the penalty box, and his mistimed strike found Dean Majoor at the near post who made fine work of the volley to send the ball over the Thirroul goalkeeper for an opening goal.

Thirroul eventually began to cool the Fernhill momentum, launching an attack on the 7th minute through a Jonathon De Lyall cross into a failed bicycle strike by Nathan Orvad with Jesse Bragg at the far post unable to finish the difficult volley opportunity.

A lovely ball by Thirroul’s Brad Matiuscenko on the 14th minute through to leading season goalscorer Robbie Gyngell was nearly rewarded, but fine work from Fernhill goalkeeper James McClelland stifled the chance.

Minutes later Thirroul’s pressure was rewarded, with a deflected ball from Nathan Orvad rising sky high on the edge of the penalty box with Bragg showcasing fine skill to power a left foot volley on the tight angle across the face to crash into the side netting to equalise the fixture.

On the 27th minute Thirroul captain Ryan Hunter fell victim to a leg complaint, forcing an early substitution and James Townson into the game.

The injury did not stifle the Thunder momentum, with the ever-threatening Tom Goodier latching onto a ball behind the defensive line and calmly sliding it past the keeper for the ball to creep inside the right post to earn the lead on the 29th minute.

Fernhill continued to pressure with strikes hitting the wood work but unable to enter the goals.

Fernhill’s Ross Graham attempted to do it all himself, with a ball through to Nathan Sackett bumbled back to Graham who send a left foot strike from range wide of the goals on the 36th minute.

On the 43rd minute came a crucial goal for Thirroul Thunder courtesy of an inch perfect cross from retiring Dane Henderson, with Gyngell having no issue directing it into the bottom right corner for a 3-1 lead.

Moments before halftime, Fernhill bounced back courtesy of a class turn from Andrew Breslin and struck the ball past the rushing Thirroul goalkeeper Josh Williams to keep the game tight before the halftime whistle.

An entertaining five goals throughout the opening 45 minutes, saw the half-time score read 3-2 to League champions Thirroul Thunder.

Fernhill came out of the dressing-room full of confidence, dominating the early stages of the second half thanks to a Thirroul ill-discipline giving away a number of fouls.

A back-header from Nathan Sackett saw Ross Graham on the 51st minute blaze a shot curling just wide of the left post in a strong early chance to equalize the Grand Final.

On the 55th minute, Fernhill’s Majoor had a golden chance off a free kick, with a failed Thirroul clearance landing at his feet in the penalty area, and unfortunately sent the strike wide of goals.

Fernhill continued to push throughout the half, with a class ball from substitute Michael Stephenson finding a charging Majoor down the left sideline, who cut back in and sent a dangerous cross for Kevin McDonald with a corner kick earned on the 69th minute.

Thirroul did not look threatened with the narrow lead, continuing to push with a classy strike by opening goalscorer Bragg straight at the Fernhill goalkeeper for a comfortable save on the 76th minute.

Fernhill appeared to be lacking the energy to bring the game to extra time, with the broad pitch and warm conditions appearing to have an impact on the team.

It took until injury time for the match to be put beyond doubt, with a lovely free kick from the retiring Henderson curling over the wall and sneaking into the bottom left corner to allow the Thirroul faithful to truly celebrate their Grand Final victory.

A proud Henderson talked through the final kick.

“Last kick, might as well make it a good one. I was confident I would get it in, but I didn't think it would be that good, but I will take it.”

Fernhill coach Mick Rowles was proud of his teams efforts throughout the season despite the result.

“It is always disappointing to lose one of these games, but we can be proud of the guys,” he said.

“We earned the right to be here today, we have played good football all season and we were able to come out and wrestle with them for 90 minutes so I cant be prouder of the whole team.”
