Thirroul JFC has more than 600 players from Under 6s to Senior Men's and Women's teams. The club's aim is to foster football by creating an environment for our Thunderbolts players where success is judged - not by winning - but by having fun, improving skills and participating in a club that is active within the community.

Under 18s trial postponed

Brad Walter

Please be advised that the Under 18s trial scheduled for Sunday, October 30, has been postponed to a later date.

This decision was made because of Thirroul JFC's unique position as the only Football South Coast club whose junior and senior teams are part of the same organisation.

At other clubs, Under 18s Division 1 teams are aligned to a senior club and all other age teams, including Under 18 Division 2 teams, are operated by a seperate junior club.

Thirroul JFC WILL field a team in the U18s Division 1 competition and has officially advised Football South Coast of the club's intentions for next season.

The club also expects to enter teams in the Under 18s Division 2 and Under 17s competitions.

Thirroul JFC views these teams as a pathway to the Thunder and is in the process of appointing an Under 18s Division 1 coach who will work closely with Youth Grade coach John Cropper.

As demonstrated by John's appointment to the role of Mentor: Coaching and Development in 2016, Thirroul JFC is committed to the development of young players within our club by providing them with quality coaching.

Unlike other clubs who are currently conducting trials, Thirroul JFC will have players sign up at Football South Coast's junior registration in the new year who may be worthy of consideration for our U18s Division 1 team.

This includes players from this year's U18.2, U17.1, U16.1 and U16.2 teams, who may not yet have decided what they are doing next season.

The success of the U17.1 and Under 16s teams this season suggests Thirroul JFC has a strong group of players in these age groups and the club wants to field the strongest possible team in the Under 18s Division 1 competition.

Players and parents should also be aware that NO club can register players before January 1 so this means it is impossible to finalise an U18s squad before then with any certainty.

Thirroul JFC will announce a kick around in coming weeks for players interested in playing Youth Grade next season and anyone wanting to be considered for the U18.1 team in 2017 will also be invited to attend.

The club is grateful for the understanding of those players who had registered for the trial, including those from other clubs, and hopes they will attend the kick around. A further announcement will be made once details of the kick around are confirmed.

Gallant Thunderbirds do club proud

Brad Walter

Thirroul Thunderbirds demonstrated the benefits of forming a women’s Youth Grade team this season in a hard fought U21s Champion of Champions grand final loss at Valentine Sports Park on Sunday.

After failing to stave off an early onslaught from Epping FC, the Thunderbirds went down 4-0 but the score line did not reflect the quality of the match or the ability of the young Thirroul team.

With four of the players who took the field in the grand final not yet having turned 16 years old and only four being over the age of 18, the future looks bright for the Thunderbirds in coming seasons.

As the only Under 21s team in the Football South Coast women’s competition this year, Thirroul played Division 2 and were competitive but often had to supplement their side with players from the club’s junior ranks.

In total, 10 players from the U15s, U16s and U17s girls teams were used during the season and they benefitted from the experience.

Playing Champion of Champions has been another significant step in the development of those girls and the entire 18-strong squad who spent seven weeks training together for the tournament.

After a dramatic 2-1 golden goal defeat of Canterbury FC in the quarter-finals and an 11-0 win over Blacktown champions Riverstone, the Thunderbirds faced a much tougher opponent in the grand final.

Epping FC had been undefeated this season in the North West Sydney Women’s Division 2 competition, and demolished Southern Tablelands 13-0 and Miranda Magpies 5-1 to qualify for the decider.

Little separated the teams in ability but Thirroul struggled to cope with Epping’s physicality and their finishing was better, with left forward Caitlin Wood claiming a hat-trick of goals and striker Mia Axe scoring in the 82nd minute.

Thunderbirds goal keeper Shahne Hocking was one of the team’s best but was powerless to stop Wood pouncing to score in the sixth and 11th minute after she had palmed away shots at goal.

Thirroul’s best chance came just before halftime when a powerful strike by Kirsten Ward rebounded off the post and the game may have turned out differently if the ball had found the back of the net instead.

Wood claimed her third goal in the 51st minute but the Thunderbirds never gave up and stuck to their possession-based passing game in a bid to create more scoring opportunities for Ward and fellow forwards Beth Grew, Veronica Calderon and Bryony Loosemore.

The mid-field rotation of Jenna Rose, Zoe Grew, Cara Baker, Arlena Mackenzie and Ashleigh Walter were tireless, while defenders Amy Panteli, Emily Pannell, Mae Gibbeson, Sarah Hanlon and Lily Clarke worked themselves to exhaustion in the high intensity match.

Thirroul JFC would like to thank Football South Coast and the Women’s Council for their support of the Thunderbirds U21s in the Champion of Champions.

Thanks also to the Woonona club for allowing the team to train at Ocean Park while Thirroul’s grounds were unavailable due to drainage works, and to Tarrawanna AAW, Russell Vale Over 30s and Woonona U16s Girls teams for practice matches.

A special thanks to the coaching staff of John Paegle, John Cropper and Amy Ziebell for their efforts with the team and to Tina Siskoska, Michelle Carney and Jason Hegarty for their help and support.

Senior Summer 7s Changes to a SUNDAY for 2016

Brad Walter

Due to the drainage improvement works at Gibson Park, the Senior Summer 7s competition will be played on Sunday for this year only.

Unfortunately the club's two main grounds are currently out of action after the installation of a slit drainage system, which will ensure Gibson Park is able to be used for training and games after periods of wet weather in the future.

As a result, the Senior Summer 7s will be played on the mini-field near the cricket nets and the field in the adjoining McCauley Park.

This will mean only two games can be played at the same time and night matches cannot be played on the field at McCauley Park as it does not have lights.

Therefore, Thirroul JFC has made the decision to move the Summer 7s to Sunday until the main grounds at Gibson Park are able to be used.

Thirroul JFC is seeking expressions of interest from teams wanting to play in the Senior Summer 7s competition. CLICK ON THIS LINK

Please be advised that it may not be possible to accommodate all requests and preference will be given to those teams who played last year.

In addition, Thirroul JFC will conduct an U16-U18s Mixed Summer 7s competition starting on Wednesday, 19th October. For further details and to nominate a team, please CLICK ON THIS LINK

Antony Stott Memorial Fund remains open

Brad Walter

The Antony Stott Memorial Fund to raise money and awareness for the campaign to have defibrillators at every Football South Coast ground will remain open after recently surpassing more than $8,600 in donations.

Players from the Thirroul Thunder and Sandon Point Division 2 Community League teams, who were playing in the match at Gibson Park on July 16 in which Antony tragically passed away, came together on the eve of their grand final to promote the fund and the need for defibrillators at grounds.

Thirroul JFC is fortunate to have received a defibrillator donated by the Austinmer Otters and it was on hand at the Community League grand finals at Ian McLennan Oval on September 17.

However, many clubs do not have a defibrillator and Antony's family started the campaign on chuffed.org to have the life saving devices available at all grounds.

The story aired on the WIN television news the night before the grand final, won 1-0 by Sandon Point, and it has since been decided to keep the fund open until at least October 25.

Updated: Thunder Win Grand Final

Brad Walter

Report by Daniel McGookin for Football South Coast

Thirroul Thunder have won the WGC Cranes District League Reserve Grade Grand Final, triumphing in a free-flowing and entertaining match played in perfect football conditions at WIN Stadium.

The impressive 4-2 victory over a determined Fernhill Foxes outfit has put a full stop on a season that has contained tragedy and now triumph for Thirroul.

Thirroul Thunder coach Kevin Lewis was a proud and relieved man following the the result today.

“I am very, very, very happy with the win. It has been a long tough year for the club, with 25,26 boys part of that game today,” he said.

“There has been three or four games against Fernhill through the year and they have all been tough battles so thank goodness we came out on top today.”

The grand final started perfectly for the Foxes, with Fernhill having the dream start earning a corner within the opening seconds of the fixture.

The corner drifted to an isolated Mitchell Woods at the back of the penalty box, and his mistimed strike found Dean Majoor at the near post who made fine work of the volley to send the ball over the Thirroul goalkeeper for an opening goal.

Thirroul eventually began to cool the Fernhill momentum, launching an attack on the 7th minute through a Jonathon De Lyall cross into a failed bicycle strike by Nathan Orvad with Jesse Bragg at the far post unable to finish the difficult volley opportunity.

A lovely ball by Thirroul’s Brad Matiuscenko on the 14th minute through to leading season goalscorer Robbie Gyngell was nearly rewarded, but fine work from Fernhill goalkeeper James McClelland stifled the chance.

Minutes later Thirroul’s pressure was rewarded, with a deflected ball from Nathan Orvad rising sky high on the edge of the penalty box with Bragg showcasing fine skill to power a left foot volley on the tight angle across the face to crash into the side netting to equalise the fixture.

On the 27th minute Thirroul captain Ryan Hunter fell victim to a leg complaint, forcing an early substitution and James Townson into the game.

The injury did not stifle the Thunder momentum, with the ever-threatening Tom Goodier latching onto a ball behind the defensive line and calmly sliding it past the keeper for the ball to creep inside the right post to earn the lead on the 29th minute.

Fernhill continued to pressure with strikes hitting the wood work but unable to enter the goals.

Fernhill’s Ross Graham attempted to do it all himself, with a ball through to Nathan Sackett bumbled back to Graham who send a left foot strike from range wide of the goals on the 36th minute.

On the 43rd minute came a crucial goal for Thirroul Thunder courtesy of an inch perfect cross from retiring Dane Henderson, with Gyngell having no issue directing it into the bottom right corner for a 3-1 lead.

Moments before halftime, Fernhill bounced back courtesy of a class turn from Andrew Breslin and struck the ball past the rushing Thirroul goalkeeper Josh Williams to keep the game tight before the halftime whistle.

An entertaining five goals throughout the opening 45 minutes, saw the half-time score read 3-2 to League champions Thirroul Thunder.

Fernhill came out of the dressing-room full of confidence, dominating the early stages of the second half thanks to a Thirroul ill-discipline giving away a number of fouls.

A back-header from Nathan Sackett saw Ross Graham on the 51st minute blaze a shot curling just wide of the left post in a strong early chance to equalize the Grand Final.

On the 55th minute, Fernhill’s Majoor had a golden chance off a free kick, with a failed Thirroul clearance landing at his feet in the penalty area, and unfortunately sent the strike wide of goals.

Fernhill continued to push throughout the half, with a class ball from substitute Michael Stephenson finding a charging Majoor down the left sideline, who cut back in and sent a dangerous cross for Kevin McDonald with a corner kick earned on the 69th minute.

Thirroul did not look threatened with the narrow lead, continuing to push with a classy strike by opening goalscorer Bragg straight at the Fernhill goalkeeper for a comfortable save on the 76th minute.

Fernhill appeared to be lacking the energy to bring the game to extra time, with the broad pitch and warm conditions appearing to have an impact on the team.

It took until injury time for the match to be put beyond doubt, with a lovely free kick from the retiring Henderson curling over the wall and sneaking into the bottom left corner to allow the Thirroul faithful to truly celebrate their Grand Final victory.

A proud Henderson talked through the final kick.

“Last kick, might as well make it a good one. I was confident I would get it in, but I didn't think it would be that good, but I will take it.”

Fernhill coach Mick Rowles was proud of his teams efforts throughout the season despite the result.

“It is always disappointing to lose one of these games, but we can be proud of the guys,” he said.

“We earned the right to be here today, we have played good football all season and we were able to come out and wrestle with them for 90 minutes so I cant be prouder of the whole team.”

Updated: Three Thirroul teams in Champion of Champions

Brad Walter

The U16.1 team began Thirroul JFC's Champion of Champions campaign with a tough 2-1 loss to Central Coast League winners Kanwal FC at Pluim Park, Lisarow on Sunday, 18th September.

Thirroul JFC is proud to have three teams representing Football South Coast in the  tournament this season, with the U17.1 and W21s teams yet to play their first matches.

The U16.1 team qualified for the Champion of Champions, which has been played since 1968, after finishing first in their competition and they also won the grand final against Unanderra.

The U17.1 team also completed the League and Grand Final double and will face Balmain and Districts FC from the Canterbury competition at 10.15am on Sunday, 25th September at Ian McLennan Oval, Kembla Grange.

The Thirroul W21 were nominated by FSC to play in the Champion of Champions and will take on Canterbury JFC in their first match on Sunday, 9th October at a time and venue to be determined.

The Champion of Champions is a knockout tournament with the winner progressing to the next round and the loser eliminated. The final is on 23rd October at FNSW's Valentine Park headquarters.

Thunder Division 2 and 4 teams in Community League grand finals

Brad Walter

Thunder Blue Division 4 grand finalists

Thunder Blue Division 4 grand finalists

Thirroul's Division 2 and Division 4 Amateur teams will play the grand finals of their Community League competitions on Saturday at Ian McLennan Park.

The Thunder Division 2 team meet Sandon Point at 11.30am in what is a fitting finale to the season for two groups of players who have formed a close bond since the tragic passing of Antony Stott, while the Thunder Blue team play Vale Pups in the Division 4 decider at 9am.

Both teams qualified after winning their semi-finals last Saturday, with Division 2 beating Jamberoo Rovers 2-1 and Division 4 coming from 2-0 down to triumph 3-2 against Razorbacks.

The hopes of an all-Thirroul grand final in Division 3 were dashed when both teams were beaten by the narrowest margins in their semi-finals, with Gibson Park Rangers losing 2-1 to Albion Park City and Thunder White going down 1-0 to South Coast United Blue.

However, with the club's four Amateur teams making the finals, it has been a season for which all the players deserve to be congratulated after the difficult circumstances they have endured.

Best of luck to Thunder Division 2 and Thunder Blue in their grand finals on Saturday.

Summer 7s Sponsorship Opportunity

Brad Walter

Thirroul JFC is seeking naming rights sponsors for the popular Junior and Senior Summer 7s competitions.

The Junior Summer 7s, featuring competitions for U6-7s, U8-9s, U10-11s, U12-13s and U14-15s, commences on Monday, 19th September and will be held on 13 Monday afternoons and evenings until 19th December.

The Senior Summer 7s will start in mid-October and comprises of two divisions of men's competitions and a mixed competition played each Wednesday, with the finals in late January.

We are also investigating whether it is possible to introduce a U16-18s competition on Wednesdays as part of the Senior Summer 7s.

This is a great opportunity for any business wanting to strengthen their relationship with the local community, and particularly families, as last year there were more than 750 registered players - 446 in the Junior Summer 7s and 309 in the Senior Summer 7s.

Similar numbers are expected for the upcoming competitions.

In addition to naming rights for the Summer 7s competition, Thirroul JFC can offer sponsors even greater exposure through the club's website and FaceBook pages, which currently have more than 1350 members.

Besides promoting your business at the ground and canteen each Monday and/or Wednesday during Summer 7s, Thirroul JFC would:

* promote your business as the major sponsor of Summer 7s on the thirroulfootball.com.au website, with a link to your website or Facebook page;

* promote the name of your business on the banner of the Thirroul Football Summer Sevens Facebook page as the naming rights sponsor (i.e: Sponsor's Name Junior and/or Senior Summer 7s)

* provide a weekly promotion for your business during Summer 7s on the Thirroul Football Summer Sevens Facebook page (358 people like this page to automatically receive updates whenever anything is posted - and that number will grow significantly once Summer 7s starts).

* provide a weekly promotion for your business during Summer 7s on the Thirroul Junior Football Facebook page (428 people like this page to automatically receive updates whenever anything is posted), and:

* provide a weekly promotion for your business during Summer 7s in one of the five News slots on the thirroulfootball.com.au website (currently averages 1242 unique visitors per week).

Thirroul JFC is seeking a sponsor for each of the Junior and Senior competitions but would consider any application to sponsor both.

Please contact Brad Walter (0417 227218 or brad.f.walter@gmail.com) for further information or to express an interest in sponsoring the Summer 7s.

Four grand final wins for Thirroul junior teams

Brad Walter

U17.1 League and Grand Champions

U17.1 League and Grand Champions

Thirroul JFC completed a successful season for graded juniors with four teams winning grand finals on the weekend and the U16.2 team being runners-up.

The U17.1 and U16.1 teams both added Grand Champions medals to the ones they received for being League Champions at the end of the regular season, while the U12.3 and U14.2 teams also won their grand finals at Unanderra Oval.

It was a particularly impressive effort by the U14.2 team as they had finished fourth at the end of the regular season and had to back up from an extra time win in Kiama last Tuesday night to qualify for the grand final against the previously undefeated Albion Park on Saturday.

Lachlan Kay scored from long range in the first half and Noah Biddulph found the back of the net in the second half to clinch a well deserved victory for the team, which is coached by Marcus Aukland and Seamus Macken-Walsh, and managed by Toni Dobbs.

The 12.3 team had earlier in the day overcome Helensburgh 1-0 to secure a hard fought win after qualifying for the grand final from third place, via a penalty shoot-out against Balgownie the previous weekend and a 2-0 win over Dapto in the opening round of the finals series.

The U17.1 team concluded a great weekend of junior grand final action for the club when they hung on with 10 players for the final 12 minutes to beat Coledale 2-1 in extra time on Sunday.

Callum Oliver netted both of Thirroul's goals, scoring in the first half to put the side ahead 1-0 at the break and securing the win in extra time after Coledale had levelled to ensure a gripping finish to a game which was played in great spirit as many players had mates in the opposition.

The win was the culmination of four years of hard work by the boys with coach Craig Smith, manager Paul Thorndyke and trainer Darren Morgan.

Both Under 16s teams also improved on their performances in previous seasons, with the U16.1s winning a third consecutive grand final under the guidance of Michael Grew, Lawrie Baker and  Ian Picton to claim both trophies for the first time.

The U16.1 team bounced back from a penalty shoot-out defeat to Unanderra in the opening weekend of the finals and extra-time win over South Coast United to qualify for the grand final with a 2-1 win over Unanderra in a high quality decider on Friday night.

The U16.2 team also played strongly but went down to Balgownie 3-1 in another hard fought game between these two sides which was played just three days after Thirroul had beaten Port Kembla in Kiama on Tuesday night to qualify for the grand final.

Congratulations to U16.2 coach Damian McGlinn, manager Jason Darcy and all of the players for their performance with the team this season, after falling short of a place in the finals last year.

Thirroul JFC would like to thank all coaches, managers, players and parents of the club's 17 graded junior teams and 27 Mini Roos teams for their time and effort this season and hope to see everyone back in 2017.

Thirroul U16.1 team complete hat trick of grand final wins

Brad Walter

Thirroul JFC's U16.1 team won a third consecutive grand final after beating Unanderra 2-1 at Unanderra Oval on Friday night.

The U16.1 team, who have defeated Wollongong in the previous two grand finals, hung on to add the Grand Champions title to the League Champions title they won for the first time this season after leading Unanderra 2-0 at halftime.

Goal scorers for Thirroul were striker Damian Grew and left forward Jake Matiuscenko, while goalkeeper Blake Picton saved a first half penalty that swung momentum the way of his side after the skilful Unanderra side dominated early.

The win was a well deserved reward for the effort the players and coaching staff, comprising of Michael Grew, Lawrie Baker and Ian Picton, have put in over a long period of time to become the best team in their division.

Unfortunately, the 16.2 team was unable to overcome Balgownie in a hard fought grand final and lost 3-1.

The U12.3 team play Helensburgh in their grand final at 9.45am Saturday, while the U14.2 team meet Albion Park at 12.30pm Saturday, with both games being played at Unanderra Oval.

On Sunday, the U17.1 team will attempt to add the Grand Champions title to the League Champions one they have already won when they take on Coledale at Unanderra Oval at 8.30am.

All four of Thirroul JFC's Community League teams have made the finals in a historic first for the club.

With the Thunder qualifying for all three grades of the District League finals, this means all seven of the club's senior men's teams will be playing beyond the regular season.

The Division 2 Thunder team, pictured, finished second in their Community League competition and will play Coasters FC in the major semi-final at King Mickey Park on Saturday at 2.45pm.

Gibson Park Rangers were also second in Division 3 and finished two points ahead of Thunder White, who claimed fourth spot due to head-to-head results in their matches against Puckamia Bay Dugongs Grey.

GPR play South Coast United at Ian McLennan Park at 2.45pm Saturday, while Thunder White face Albion Park FC at Albion Oval in an elimination semi-final at 2.4pm Saturday

Thunder Blue finished third in Division 4 and play Port Kembla Puma Masters at King George V Oval 2 in an elimination semi-final at 2.45pm Saturday.

Congratulations to the players and everyone involved with all four Community League teams for their success so far this season, and best of luck in the finals.
